Mumbai is the most populous city in India with an estimated city population of approximately 18.4 million people. It was originally comprised of seven islands on the coastline of Konkan before these were joined into the city of Bombay. The name Bombay was given up in favour of Mumbai in 1995.
Mumbai has the highest number of millionaires and billionaires all over India, making it the wealthiest city in the country. Moreover, it is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital and is the predominant port city in India. India's major film industry, the Hindi cinema or Bollywood, is based in Mumbai. This is the perfect chance to experience Film City and maybe take part in a shooting yourself! Mumbai is a highly multicultural city as the metropolis attracts migrants from all over the country. The gap between poverty and wealth is extreme in the city: It has some of Asia's biggest slums while also being an urban jungle with some of the most expensive real estate.
The best time to travel to Mumbai is in winter, which is basically a milder version of its summer, between November and February. Summer is from March to May when it is incredibly hot and humid, while the months between June and September are filled with relentless monsoons.
It is an amazing city to explore due to its diversity. You find caves such as Elephanta, Kanheri and Mahakali within the boundaries of the city, which is unusual for Indian megacities. It is also a great city to explore by foot. Walk past the colonial buildings from when the British ruled the city. See the famous landmarks Gateway of India, Victoria Terminus and the Taj Mahal Hotel in South Mumbai, from Churchgate to Colaba. Walk along Marine Drive and visit the numerous beaches of the city of which the cleanest ones are in the northwest Mumbai area. Particularly famous beaches are Chowpatty and Juhu Beach. On top of that, you can immerse yourself fully in the diverse Indian culture by visiting the religious places in the city. There are temples, mosques, synagogues, churches and many other places of worship!
