While Tokyo is not actually considered a city it is often described as such. It is in fact a “metropolitan prefecture”, an area that is treated as a combination of a city and a prefecture (an administrative jurisdiction) established in 1943. This is part of what makes Tokyo truly unique! There are 23 special wards, each treated like its own city as well as 39 municipalities, which means the population of Tokyo is over 13 million people.
The city is home to some of the worlds leading business including 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, more than any other city in the world and many of the worlds leading electronics manufacturers are based there too.
Tokyo has been voted one of the most livable cities in the world based on the shopping, nightlife, helpfulness of locals and the transportation system. It has more Michelin starred restaurants than any other city in the world. It also has a number of museums and theatres and will be the host nation for the 2020 summer Olympic and Paralympic games.
