Gorzo is one of the most beautiful and unique islands in the Mediterranean, where life has barely changed for hundreds of years. This tour will take you round this amazing island visiting its major attractions and many of the 22 churches the island has!
You will begin your tour at Mgarr Harbour where you can see the Fort Chambray, built during 1749-1757, and the church dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes that overlooks the harbour. Next you will go to the capital Victoria, named in 1887 in honour of Queen Victoria in her jubilee year. Here there is the famous Citadel, known as the crown of Gozo, partly due to its location at the very centre of the island. The fortifications and buildings in the town date back from the times of the Aragonese in 1282 through to 1530, when the Knights of St. John were on the island. You can also visit The Bishop’s chancery, the il-Mall, the Rundle Gardens and the ancient Ggantuja Temples and Fungus Rock. Make sure to stop by the famous Azure Window at Dwejra. This is an amazing limestone archway that has been created by thousands of years of sea erosion.
One of the most impressive churches on the island is the Xewkija famed rotunda church. Able to hold the entire population of the Xewkija village, approximately 3000 people, the church also has the fourth largest supported dome in the world. This is just a handful of amazing things to see and do in this stunning city!
