Full Description

Built in the shell of the former Holyrood Free Church and Duchess of Gordon's School and located within the Holyrood Palace Complex, official residence of the Royal Family in Edinburgh, the Gallery provides purpose-built facilities to enable a programme of changing exhibitions of the most delicate works of art from the Royal Collection to be shown in Scotland. The Queen’s Gallery was opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 29 November 2002, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. It hosts a programme of changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection.

Arriving at the gallery you will be welcomed and given a complimentary audio guide to enable you to get the most from the visit. Depending on when you visit you will see an ever changing collection of artworks inspired by Scotland as well as travelling exhibitions in an ambitious programme of displays.

Artworks from the Royal Collection on display include memorabilia and photographs from Britain’s Royal Family as well as many travelling exhibitions form Leonardo da Vinci to Holbein and much much more. The Gallery also houses a cafeteria offering tea, coffee and other refreshments.

The Gallery is located at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, on Canongate at the Southern End of The Royal Mile, Scotland's most famous street and immediately adjacent the Scottish Parliament building.

Departure / meeting point

Starting point of the tour is at:
Palace of Holyroodhouse,
The Royal Mile,

Royal Collection Trust sites include airport-style security checks as part of the admission process. In order to make the process as simple as possible we suggest that you try to avoid bringing large bags. If you have such items we encourage leaving them either on the coach or at your hotel. Especially during summer, this is even more relevant.

For safety reasons, pushchairs cannot be taken into the Gallery. They must be left at the entrance and reclaimed at the end of the visit.

Remember to bring valid photo ID with you.
